A small school now a big name

Who had every heard of Davidson University? I think after Sunday afternoon lots of people were looking at the google map trying to find out where they are located.

Davidson Wildcats played against the Kansas Jayhawks for a trip to the final four and a chance to be the 2008 National Champions. They came up one basket short. They had not lost a game in their last 25 outings. The Davidson Wildcats almost pulled off one of the most stunning upsets in the history of the NCAA.

Davidson has less than 9,000 residents in their little town, located in North Carolina. Their enrollment at their university is 1,700 students. To compare them with other universities, Indiana University has over 99,000, Purdue over 68,000 and Ball State over 20,000 students enrolled. WOW!

Since they have started the seeding process in the NCAA this is the first time in the history of the tournament all four number ones have made it to the final four. Only thing I can think of now is...b-o-r-i-n-g! I always want to root for the underdog, but with all four of the final teams being number ones, who's the underdog?

When they had made the selections a few Sundays ago, Clark Kellogg told us North Carolina was the out right number one team. So in the final four you'd have a number one playing a number four team and the two and three team playing each other. So in the final game you would/should have a number one and two face off for the national title. I think between North Carolina, Kansas, UCLA and Memphis, it will wind up being the Tar Heels and the Bruins in the finals, with the winner being...who cares? Again, b-o-r-i-n-g.

A few years ago no one had ever heard of Gonzaga or Coppin State. Every year it seems those teams, plus a few new teams make it to the big dance in March. After this year we have to add to our vocabulary the words Davidson Wildcats. Maybe in the next few years one of these unheard of schools will get to reign as champion for a year.

March Madness has been great again this year and I can't wait to hear the song "One Shining Moment" once the fat lady sings.
