A small school now a big name

Who had every heard of Davidson University? I think after Sunday afternoon lots of people were looking at the google map trying to find out where they are located.

Davidson Wildcats played against the Kansas Jayhawks for a trip to the final four and a chance to be the 2008 National Champions. They came up one basket short. They had not lost a game in their last 25 outings. The Davidson Wildcats almost pulled off one of the most stunning upsets in the history of the NCAA.

Davidson has less than 9,000 residents in their little town, located in North Carolina. Their enrollment at their university is 1,700 students. To compare them with other universities, Indiana University has over 99,000, Purdue over 68,000 and Ball State over 20,000 students enrolled. WOW!

Since they have started the seeding process in the NCAA this is the first time in the history of the tournament all four number ones have made it to the final four. Only thing I can think of now is...b-o-r-i-n-g! I always want to root for the underdog, but with all four of the final teams being number ones, who's the underdog?

When they had made the selections a few Sundays ago, Clark Kellogg told us North Carolina was the out right number one team. So in the final four you'd have a number one playing a number four team and the two and three team playing each other. So in the final game you would/should have a number one and two face off for the national title. I think between North Carolina, Kansas, UCLA and Memphis, it will wind up being the Tar Heels and the Bruins in the finals, with the winner being...who cares? Again, b-o-r-i-n-g.

A few years ago no one had ever heard of Gonzaga or Coppin State. Every year it seems those teams, plus a few new teams make it to the big dance in March. After this year we have to add to our vocabulary the words Davidson Wildcats. Maybe in the next few years one of these unheard of schools will get to reign as champion for a year.

March Madness has been great again this year and I can't wait to hear the song "One Shining Moment" once the fat lady sings.

Spring Break in Florida

Patrick and I left on March 20th at 7 a.m. to go to Hollywood, Florida. We have spent the last nine days in Hollywood, Ft Lauderdale, Tampa and Orlando. I'm thinking I can't wait till retirement to spend a longer time there. I missed my husband and friends (in that order) here in Indiana while I was gone, but it is nice to be back home to see them, but I'm already dreaming of being back there.

For the last nine days I have spent day and night with my parents. I have another reason now to be thankful I'm married, have a family of my own and a home I can call my own! I guess I should just stop the story there. If you are reading this and think you require more of the story and you've got my number...give me a call.

In my previous post I mentioned I love Mother Nature pictures. Well I had to add a few of my favorites to my blog for everyone to enjoy. Each time I look at these it amazes me how God created such beauty.

This photo was taken on Wednesday, March 26, 2008. Looking east out over the ocean, the sun is coming up:

Looking north from the beach at Hollywood. North is Ft Lauderdale. A pier can be seen in the foreground. The sun was shinning bright with a cooling northeast breeze...ahhhh:

Tuesday morning view from our apartment as the sun comes up over the trees:

Another sunrise pic from Wednesday morning:

Thanks God!

Water, water and more water.

Maybe a little behind with this post...but better late than never.

I love Mother Nature pictures. Recently, she thought she would catch us up with the drought we were facing since last summer.

This is a picture of the train track that crosses the river just south of Crothersville and north of Austin:

I went back later that afternoon and got this shot:

On my way to Seymour on Wednesday I captured this photo just south of the Pines:

That same afternoon, on the way back to Crothersville I got this shot on US 31:

The house that is located south of the river between Crothersville and Austin looked like this at 10 a.m.:

Going back at 4 p.m. you can see the water rose to cover the foundation of the house:

I heard the family had to be rescued by boat from the house.

This shot was taken on US 31 during the afternoon:

An addition to the family

Patrick was lucky (?) enough to have his name drawn for the newest member of our family.

Not sure how excited I am just yet...we are still looking for a name for 'her'

I think I like the name Toni. Any suggestions?

What are friends for?

I spent a couple hours today with my bff Shelley. Today is her birthday and Patrick and I wanted to do something special with her. If you are reading this blog, then you probably know Shelley and you know how many hours she spends at her jobs. So, since she spends so many hours on the net and with all of her other irons in the fire, her day is stretched to the max. I tried to coax her off of the couch and out of the house for a few hours. I was successful and unsuccessful. I got her off of the couch for a couple hours, but we didn't manage to get her out of the house.

Instead, we sat in her office and laughed for the few hours I was there. We recalled things that happened to us over 30 years ago! Shelley is one year older than me (I have to get that in here somewhere) and we both attended school together. We were in the same Home Economics class in high school. She dated my older brother in high school, but we didn't really become close friends until she moved across the street from me about 30+ years ago.

There are so many memories, a few sad ones, but for the most part the memories are funny happy ones. Today we talked about when Benjamin was probably 3 months old and we took him to J C Penneys to get his monthly picture taken. On the way to Seymour Ben was hungry so I fed him a bottle. Once we arrived at Penneys I was carrying Ben into the store to the studio. I was bouncing him around and getting him into a good mood so the pictures would be good. Of course at that time I didn't have any children or been around babies much, so I didn't realize it was easy for them to burp up a little milk when their bellies were full. Well it happened :(
The only thing I had to clean Benjamin's outfit was with a soft, fluffy, white J C Penney towel. Needless to say, Ben got his picture taken that day and he never looked more fresh and clean! Side note: If you purchase towels at J C Penneys, make sure to wash them before you use them.

Shelley and I spent many hours together, with our spouses, playing cards. Shelley and I were great partners and would win, most of the time. If we didn't it was because our spouses cheated. Once, when Shelley and I knew for a fact her husband had cheated to win, (he was denying it) I asked him to say, ten times while looking me in the eye, "I did not do that" What followed still makes Shelley and I laugh out loud today. In his best southern voice and for a total of ten straight times, Shelley's husband said, "I did nooooot doooo thaaaat, I did nooooot doooo thaaaat, I did nooooot doooo thaaaat, I did nooooot doooo thaaaat, I did nooooot doooo thaaat, I did nooooot doooo thaaaat, I did nooooot doooo thaaat, I did nooooot doooo thaaaat, I did nooooot doooo thaaaat, I did noooot doooo thaaaat!" For the record, we know he did do that (cheat) and that is how they won!

In the early 80's Shelley owned a black chevette. I was between jobs so Shelley and I were together most of the time. One afternoon we took a trip through the country. We had taken a brand new pellet gun we had just purchased. Not sure why we did, I guess for protection if someone was attempting to mess with us!??! Anyhow, as we'd come upon some street signs we'd stick the pellet gun out the window and see how close we could come to the sign. Every once-in-awhile we'd hear a 'ping' sound. Ha ha! we'd say as we were successful in hitting our target. Shelley, however, when it was her turn, would put the gun out the window and rest it on her side view mirror. I kept telling her to be careful or she'd be shooting her mirror. I think I remember her saying, "Alisa do you think I'm stupid? I'm not going to shoot my mirror!" As we made our way up Burger Hill from traveling in the bottoms, Shelley put the gun out her window as it was her turn. Ping! I was getting ready to give a point to Shelley because she was successful at hitting the target. The look on her face was priceless. "What!?" I said. She pointed to her mirror. Sure enough, there was a small bullet hole in her side view mirror. We didn't shoot anymore after that, we just declared Shelley the winner for the day and came home.

I have tons of other memories of the times Shelley and I had together, but I'll save that for another blog sometime. It's always fun to reminisce about ole' times and have a laugh or two, or three...it helps to keep us young :-)

I'd just like to wish my girlfriend a very happy birthday and may you have many more. (that way you'll always be one up on me!)

A short cut?

On Wednesday Ric, Patrick and I went to Seymour to shop at Big Lots. When we were leaving and pulling out of the parking lot onto highway 50 Ric made an unexpected turn into a field. "Where do you think you are going?" I asked. "It's a short cut," Ric said quickly. He said this was the same way he drove home from work each day so I figured he knew what he was talking about!

It looked like to me no one had traveled this way before, but Ric assured Patrick and I we were safe. A few moments later, we came upon a large cattle gate. There was no way around it. "A shortcut!" I exclaimed. In front of us was this large gate with walls of concrete on the other side. We got out of the truck and jumped over the gate and started walking to see where the walls headed. It seemed like we walked for hours, but I think it was actually only a few moments.

After a few left and right turns we were lost in the maze. Finally we came upon a door, opened it and seen a man sitting on the other side of a door working on a computer. Ric and Patrick went and knocked on the glass to get his attention. He came into the room and explained to us we needed to look into his eyes as he was going to take all of our knowledge and memory and only leave us with 30% of our brain! I told him I was not going to look at him and he was not taking any of my son's memory.

While I was arguing with him, he was looking at Ric and the next thing I seen, he zapped Ric's brain. Next it was Patrick's turn and just as quickly he was zapped too. I was the only one left. I would not look at the man so he offered me a toothbrush and said he would leave me with 35% of my brain if I would look at him. Next thing I knew, I had been zapped and we were being lead into another room.

I was so upset because I knew for the rest of our lives we would be stuck in the 8 foot by 8 foot room and have no future. I recall being very upset because my 13 year old son was not going to have the life I have always wanted for him.

When I woke up, yes this has all been a dream, my shirt was wet from sweating and my heart was about to beat out of my chest. This was about 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning and it took me about 2 hours before I could go back to sleep.

As I look back now, this was hillarious. I got to keep 5% of my knowledge and I received a new toothbrush too!

Some dreams just don't make sense. I bet a counselor would have a field day with this one. I just keep telling myself, I am NOT crazy! :-)

What time is it?

I am located in Jackson County in southern Indiana. Our county is one of the lucky ones that gets to participate in daylight savings time, thanks in part to “My Man Mitch”

I set my clock ahead the one hour before I went to bed on Saturday night. Most of the news media said to do it at 2 a.m., but I didn’t want woke up in the middle of the night to spring ahead and relinquish one hour of my life.

I was up before my alarm went off on Sunday morning. It was about 7 a.m., which was really 6 a.m. I couldn’t go back to sleep so I got up, did some computer work and got ready for church.

As you can see in some of my other blogs, a snow storm blanketed our small town on Friday and Saturday. The church attendance was down somewhat, but I wonder if people forgot about the time change?

Sunday night I went to bed at 11:32 p.m. which was really 10:32 p.m. Before I went to bed I did one last look at my emails and discovered our school was operating on a two-hour delay. So, instead of going to school at 8 a..m. (which is 7 a.m.) they would be going at 10 a.m. (which is 9 a.m.) This morning when the alarm went off at 7 a.m. (which was 6 a.m.) I was tired! I hit the snooze button several times before I decided to reset the alarm to 9 a.m.(which was 8 a.m.) I wasn’t as tired when the alarm went off the second time as I was the first.

I finally made it to work at 10 a.m. (which was 9 a.m.) I’m caught up with what I needed to do today and looking forward to the end of the day at 4:30 p.m. (which is 3:30 p.m.) I guess eventually I will get used to this spring ahead time, but, I’m already looking forward to the fall season so we can fall back and I can get my hour of life back!

Once we are there, I hope ole’ Mitch leaves us alone!

More photos of spring

This morning it was close to a white out. The snow had fallen over night and accumulated to about 9 inches. Everything was covered with a fresh white blanket of the fluffy white stuff and it was still continuing to fall from the sky.

This picture is looking west from my home.

My neighbor, Blane, has a huge evergreen in his front yard.

The post office says, "Neither rain, sleet, or snow will keep them from doing their job!" I got my mail today (with bills of course!) and the post office was open! Great job to Carolyn and her crew!

Traveling down Moore Street this morning before it was plowed. Again, it's rather white! :-)

This afternoon, Ric makes it home from working all day and gets out the equipment to move the pretty white stuff. Once we start moving it from the driveways, it is melting.

This picture is from this afternoon, looking west at the sunset on March 8, 2008. As you can see, it is alot different from the first picture above.

And finally, I am thinking (hoping) by the time I get back from Florida I will be setting here, sipping on some lemonade, watching my humming birds feed, smelling the fresh cut grass, griping 'cause it is so hot!

I love spring time!

This time of year is great. The snowy weather makes for some great pictures. I am nowhere near the photographer my bff Shelley is, but this kind of weather makes it easy to capture some great shots.

I think the birds are trying to figure out what is going on? They looked a little confused just sitting there on the branches of this bush. They looked a little 'fluffy' I guess they had their winter coats on:

Photobucket

This is a picture of my bird house and bird feeders. If I had bird feed in the feeders, I don't think the birds could get to it! Also, the thermometer says 20 degrees!

This is a picture of our home on March 8, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.

I love driving in this weather and just looking at the beautiful scenery. I guess with all the white covering it makes everything look pretty and clean. As I turned north on Highway 31, this was the scene:

Nine and a half inches and I'm tickled to death!

I love to fly...NOT!

Yesterday morning as Patrick and I were getting ready for school and work the following video came on the television.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=1O8CjKBsCEo

Patrick’s comment was, “Why do they always show these clips when we are getting ready to fly?” In 15 more days we will be leaving on spring break going to sunny Florida. It never fails there is always some disaster that happens prior to us leaving.

I remember the very first time I flew I was scared to death. It was the summer of 1988. My brother was getting married and Ric and I were going to fly to Florida for the wedding and drive back with mom and dad. The week we were leaving was just a normal week. Every morning I had the alarm set to go off by playing our favorite radio station, I105.3. Monday morning the news came on the radio. “A Delta jet has crashed in the United States. All those on board are believed to have perished.” How terrible for them and their families I thought. Tuesday morning the alarm goes off and again there is another Delta plane that has crashed in the USA killing all
those on board. Wednesday and Thursday, the same thing. By Friday Ric and I are on pins and needles thinking we will be getting on a Delta flight heading for Florida by evening.

I remember my dad calling me before we left asking if we were ready to come to Florida. My response, “Waaaaaaaaaa! I’m not coming!” Some friends of ours were coming to pick us up to take us to the Louisville Airport. Had they not picked us up, I don’t really think I would have went. I remember the last thing I seen before boarding the plane was a machine where you could purchase life insurance for a minimal fee. Ugh! I remember sitting in the plane trying to hear the
instructions on how to use your seat as a float and how to put on the oxygen masks if there was an emergency. Once we took off and got into the air, it wasn’t all that bad. The view was something to look at and keep our minds off of the news. We had a lay-over in Atlanta. As we landed and the engines were reversed to slow the plane down, I thought we were going to die! Again, as we figured out what was happening, it wasn’t so bad.

We only had to spend about 10 minutes in Atlanta before we were boarding another plane heading to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. As we were landing in sunny Florida on that hot June day, I remember hearing the pilot instructing the passengers to stay seated with your seatbelts fastened until the plane taxied to a stop. I still laugh now about how the passengers jumped to their feet as soon as the first wheels hit the ground. For the life of me I couldn’t figured out what they were doing. But as Ric and I tried to get off the plane we wound up being the LAST passengers off because we hadn’t jumped the gun so quickly.

I recall making our way off the plane and heading towards the terminal. I could see my dad and mom standing at the end of the isle with their necks stretched out looking for us. As we made our way to them, I waved at them and shouted, “I love to fly!” The look on their faces was priceless. I think they could have whipped my butt right there in the airport. They really thought we weren’t coming!

So here I am again with 15 days left before I have to board another flight to Florida. Am I scared? You bet! Does it help that Matt Lauer mentioned only 1 in 1,000,000 people are in airplane crashes? Nope. He says we are more than likely to have a crash traveling to the airport rather than in the airplane.

I guess I will have to tell Ric to drive carefully on his way to the Louisville Airport!

Honesty

If you look up the word honesty you find: Honesty is the human quality of communicating and acting truthfully realted to truth as a value. This includes listening, and any action in the human repertoire--as well as speaking.

Sometimes I really wonder if some people really get what honesty means? I am a person who will, to the best of my ablility, always, always speak the truth and be honesty with you. If you ask me a question, I will give you an honesty, truthful answer. If I don't know the answer to your question, I will do my best to find one as quickly as possible.

The best phrase I've heard in a long time is 'if you tell the truth you never have to remember anything' Think about that and how truthful it is! I have a hard time believing anyone who's lied to me in the past. How do you know they aren't doing it again when their mouth is moving.

Then you have those that I honestly don't think they realize what the truth is. They have lied, listen to lies and not heard the truth in so long they would not know it if it come up and bit them on the a$$.

As I am about to give up on the public you have a honest person to cross your path. Today a lady was given $5 extra in change, but as she went to her car and gave the change back to her husband, he came into the office. He explained he had given his wife two 20's and a 5 for a total of $45. In talking with his wife about the weather as I was counting back her change, I had in my mind she had given me a $50 bill. This gentleman was honesty enough to bring back the extra $5. He explained he would not cheat anybody for no amount of money.

Thanks Herb!

Now, if the rest of my acquaintances could learn the meaning of honesty!
